Paecilomyces variotii

Paecilomyces variotii showing chains of single celled phialoconidia (ameroconidia) produced in basipetal succession from a phialide.  Conidia formed in chains with the youngest at the base are termed basocatenate.  Note phialides are swollen at their bases, gradually tapering towards their apices and may form a brush-like penicillus.  Paecilomyces sp. are similar to Penicillium sp. except that the latter are always green or blue green.  Paecilomyces are gold, green-gold, lilac or tan, but never blue or green.
