Reference Laboratory in Molecular Mycology

Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, ICPMR,
Westmead Hospital, Westmead, NSW.

Chief Scientist: Dr Wieland Meyer
Clinical Mycologist: Dr Sharon Chen

We are building a reference database for the identification of pathogenic fungi by molecular methods (complementing traditional identification offered by David Ellis), as well as developing molecular methods for the identification of fungi in clinical samples.

We are keen to extend the number and range of fungal species in our data-base and are particularly interested in the less common Candida spp. and moulds. We would also like to receive samples containing microscopically visible fungal elements or which fungi have been cultured.

We invite all interested diagnostic and research laboratories to contribute strains of interest, uncommon or problematic isolates, together with a brief clinical history. Results will be faxed or e-mailed and contributors will be acknowledged in periodic updates of the status of the data-base.

Prior to sending isolates :

Please contact Greg James or Ok Cha Lee (Mycology laboratory at the ICPMR) to expedite handling of the samples.
